Climbing Books

Climbing books and magazines can be a great resource for all things climbing. They can entertain, enlighten, and inform. There are two main uses for climbing books, learning routes and learning techniques.

Unless you are an experienced climber, or you are with experienced climbers, you will probably not be doing any first ascents. Instead, you will want to find pre-established routes that match your region and skill level. Route guides are a type of climbing book that lists all the routes in a given area, directions on how to get there, suggested skill levels, and tips. These guides are invaluable for finding new routes in your area.

The second main types of climbing books include guides to the tricks and techniques of the sport. These books will not only explain the basics of all the major techniques but introduce you to terminology which will include climbing terms, climbing slang terms, and geological terms useful in describing routes and problems. If you’re just starting out, a resource like this can improve your learning curve and introduce you to many key terms you’ll hear at either rock or gym.
