Climbing Safety
A climber can never be too safe. It is a dangerous sport in which even the most experienced and best prepared climbers can get into trouble. Part of the danger is elemental, and foul weather can challenge even seasoned climbers. But there is one basic thing you can do to ensure climbing safety.
Perhaps the most fundamental thing to remember about climbing safety is to take care of your gear. This gear is designed to save your life and should be properly taken care of. If you own a climbing rope make sure that it is always kept in its bag and stored in a cool dry place. If it does get wet make sure to properly dry it and re-treat it with compounds to maintain its life.
Climbing shoes and harnesses should also be kept clean and dry and ideally stored in bags as well. Make sure that quickdraws are properly stored and regularly check to ensure that none of the quickdraws have any rough edges corrosion or weakness. If any piece of your equipment seems compromised discard it and get another. Remember, this is your life we’re talking about. Remember this one thing and your level of climbing safety will be greatly improved.
